The Blackbird

Chancing the footpath after sharp showers,

Now muddy yet fragrant with roses in bloom.

A branch of an oak tree bowed down before me,

And on it a blackbird busking his tune.

His plumage so glossy, his beak a bright yellow,

A bunch of sparrow boys joined his song

To reach a crescendo of fruity vibratos,

A consort for summer's golden days long.

The sun shadowed pathway leads to the cafe,

Translucent green, a pleasure to tread,

Looking forward to lattes, with rich milk all frothy,

And tell of that blackbird trills in my head.

But ancients from Wirral, peddle powered in Lycra,

Roost like black crows on the gay patterned seats,

Refuelling on coffee and rolls stuffed with bacon,

Discussing their mileage and hill climbing feats.

Leotarded ladies, moist from their gym class,

Need calories in cream cakes to restore their strength.

Twittering like starlings with much jolly gossip,

outdoing each other, as tales reach new lengths.

Then old Tom's rambling on 'bout something quite complex,

I'm sure its of interest, though I've heard it before.

His dogs getting fatter with treats in abundance,

Their leads tangled up and blocking the door.

The chat at the tables grows more demanding,

The 'Dailies' discussed with much rising heat.

But for me its the bird's purest rendition,

Not the plethora of politics and government leaks!

So leaving the cafe, retracing my footsteps,

Needing some calm I beat a retreat.

The puddles have dried and the rose seems more fragrant,

Whilst the blackbird still trills from its leafy oak seat.
