Tattenhall Croquet Club Inches Closer in its Defence of 2021 Snowdonia Cup Title
Tattenhall is well on its way to reclaiming its title of 2021 North Wales and Cheshire League Champions, and with it the taking home of the Snowdonia Cup. It's been a successful week for the club, chalking up two wins in the tournament. Although both matches were against the same opposing club, Craig y Don, Llandudno, one was played in Association Croquet (AC), the other in Golf Croquet (GC).
The Tattenhall short lawn AC team of Roger Okell, Derek Bell Jones and David Boyd played their away match on Monday, 15 August, and despite the very 'challenging' dry lawn conditions at Craig y Don, Tattenhall started in great style by winning all three games in the first round. The second round brought them two more wins, which basically clinched the nine-game match, but in the 'all plays all' format, Craig y Don came back with a vengeance making a clean sweep in the third round, a complete reversal of round 1! Ultimately though, Tattenhall finished with the narrow victory of 5 games to 4.
Teams from the two clubs met again on Sunday, 21 August, this time on the Tattenhall lawns to play their Golf Croquet match. Representing the home team were Pauline Cawthorn, Adel Dalrymple, Roger Okell and David Boyd. Even with home advantage, however, after the first two rounds of closely fought games the score, by lunch time, was level at four games apiece. The two rounds in the afternoon session continued in the same way, resulting in a draw with a final tally of games at eight games all. The winning team is then decided on a count-back by the greater number of net hoops won, (ie hoops scored by each team minus hoops scored against), and by this calculation Tattenhall scored 28 against Craig y Don's 25 giving the narrow victory to Tattenhall CC again!
Two very closely fought matches between these two regular rival clubs, where, with the croquet handicapping system, a winning result is there for any team on the day. Tattenhall has now won three matches and lost one in this year's NW&C league, with two matches remaining.
Keep up the good work Tattenhall!
