Simple Skills Save Lives

In December, a member of the Webteam was shocked to read in the local press that a young, talented peripatetic music teacher (whom she knew) had collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest whilst teaching at Abbey Gate College. Thankfully, quick thinking, the superb skills of the staff and an on-site defibrillator, literally shocked the music teacher back to life.

And so, our member of the Webteam attended the first of the Defibrillator Training Courses which started again this weekend in Tattenhall. There are several defibrillators within Tattenhall but how many of us are sufficiently confident to act, to administer CPR and to use a defibrillator.

Run by our own 'Rob Selby' and 'Mark' from Malpas, these two 'First Responders' took us through our paces; their mission 'Simple Skills Save Lives'. Trained and equipped by the North West Ambulance Service, Rob wants the community of Tattenhall to become 'self reliant'.

D.R.S.A.B.C. is their 'aide-memoire':

D – look for any danger
R – determine whether you can get a response from the collapsed individual
S – shout for help (others might be able to ring for an ambulance, fetch the defibrillator)
A – open the airway
B – check for breathing
C – start CPR

We were then taught the skills in using the defibrillator and in continuing with patient care.

Astonishingly, no other 'Tattenhaller' was present at the training session this weekend – if we are to uphold Rob's vision in becoming 'self reliant', then surely we should all consider attending these valuable training sessions.
