We have covered a variety of issues in our 'Concern of the Week' feature.

You will have memories of leaves, of overgrown hedges, of fly tipping, of dog fouling, of missed surgery appointments, of bonfires, of food waste recycling, of illegal parking, of pupil safety in crossing both Tattenhall and Chester Roads and many more .....

The latest 'Concern of the Week' relates to the potential 'Fencing of the new Playground'; an issue raised by a number of Tattenhall residents.

No-one is questioning the quite splendid efforts of the Playground Committee and of the Parish Council in raising the necessary funding to support this fantastic development, and it is to be applauded that children will now enjoy a state-of-the-art play area right here in the centre of our village.

What is being voiced by some Tattenhallers, however, is that consideration be given to fence this area off, for 'child safety' amongst other issues.

The proximity to the road (specifically Tattenhall Road) and its junction with Chester Road, is a concern and is now much more obvious as the development nears its completion.

What is also a concern, is that some individuals might use this extensive playground site as an area through which to walk their dogs, particularly with the anticipated enclosure of up to 92% of 'The Park' by a newly installed school perimeter fence.

ROSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) identifies that fences around playgrounds can serve three functions:

  • Contain children within the relative safety of the play area
  • Keep dogs off the play area
  • Give children a sense that it is their area and separate from the surroundings

Such functions might be considered to be 'perfectly reasonable'.

We have also been alerted to the number of low hanging branches in the immediate vicinity and whether there might be some need to address this in the context of the 'Conservation Area' and as part of a 'Risk Assessment', thereby avoiding injuries to the eye/head.

What might also appear to be 'perfectly reasonable' is that The Park Primary School recycle/upcycle their existing low-level green metal perimeter fencing and offer it to the Playground Committee/Parish Council for re-positioning around the Playground.
