Recent research by a leading car lease company in the Uk has revealed that there are that many cars that do not have a valid MOT Certificate; mostly because of forgetting their 'new' car is now over three years old, or – for cars older than three years – that their current Certificate has expired.
An MOT Certificate is required on all vehicles three years old or more, and it needs to be renewed every year. The purpose of the MOT is to ensure that vehicles meet the statutory safety and environmental standards. Road laws about MOTs are strict, and drivers who fail to get their vehicle properly tested and certified could end up paying a fine of £1000 and facing prosecution.
Many people are under the impression that there is a grace period for getting an MOT after the previous one has expired; this is incorrect. Once the MOT has run out, the vehicle cannot be driven or parked on a road, unless it is being driven to or from getting the car repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test at a recognised Testing Centre.
So make sure you are not caught out – check when your MOT is due, and book ahead: few test centres would be able to take a last minute booking.
