'A Habitat Haven' ... Recordings on a 1 Hour Walk

Without doubt, areas of Tattenhall are a 'habitat haven'.

One of our enthusiastic 'local birders' has sent in the following, all recorded on a 1 hour walk during the festive period.

I walked from the cricket scoreboard along the bottom line of the maize stubble field. I then went through Jubilee Wood (planted in 2012 and now an established piece of local woodland) to the beginning of the open farmland.

During that time, I recorded 30 different species of birds.

Numerical highlights were the 35 Pied Wagtails and the 50 Meadow Pipits recorded in the maize stubble.

For me, the best bird was a colourful male Redpoll which is a winter visitor in our area (a scarce bird these days and one which does breed in the UK but the numbers of which are reduced) BUT I was equally pleased in the sightings of 3 Bullfinches.

The cold weather, of course, has brought in the usual numbers of Fieldfares and Redwings and there were still Pink Footed Geese honking overhead.

Recording 30 different species in but 1 hour is a credit to our local Wildlife Group who have been instrumental in creating these excellent and varied habitats – a real credit to TWiG.

I thought your readers might be interested in the variety of sightings and in advance of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch which is scheduled for the end of January.
