Transition Tattenhall has just had its second AGM last week. Transition groups are multiplying around the country, looking at ways communities might tackle the effects of climate change.

Transition Tattenhall has started a number of successful projects, which have grown over the couple of years that they group has been active.

See the Photo of the projects they are involved with. Click on photo to enlarge.

One of the most successful is the Repair Cafe, which not only repairs objects but in so doing saves the owners money and reduces landfill and our overall carbon footprint.

The Biodiversity/Mini Meadows is a project to grow more wildflowers, food for pollinating insects, – important for food production, and also in turn the insects are food for birds, and bats, which in turn help to keep pest insects down in your garden. The village is very lucky in that the Mini Meadow project has encouraged a number of private gardens to have small expanses of wildflowers for pollinators , The Rookery surgery has a little woodland patch and the Churchyard has small areas on the edges, primroses , wild garlic and wood anemones. Also the village has Glebe meadow, the woodland glade in the Jubilee wood and the new patches just beyond the Flacca Rec fields, the Community Orchard, and a large area at Tattenhall Hall. CW&C and the Parish Council have added to this by making the Spinney and the road side verge outside Covet Rise into wild flowers areas.

The Biodiversity project has already seeded another project – the Growing Children project at the Park Primary School. This has grown form a small project with the Early Years and a holiday club to a regular after school weekly gardening club. A greenhouse donated by the parents of a teaching assistant who sadly died, has provided the opportunity for the children to grow and eat vegetables as well as more flowers for pollinators. It then led to a general tidying up of the school gardens, involving parents and children.

A Community Orchard has also been planted in partnerships with the Parish Council who organised the purchase of the trees and the initial planting.

Attempts to make the community more resilient resulted in a weekly Meditation session held in the Church. A Free Pantry was recently started , it is at the rear of the Flacca Rec. club, for those in the village who are struggling with the cost of living crisis.

Community Arts in the form of an Art Trail had its first outing last year and will continue over the summer this year.

The Parish Council already had a litter picking scheme, and this has been extended.

The Watt Project is exploring ways to reach carbon neutrality by installing solar panels on large buildings -this is still in the early stages.

The AGM enjoyed some snacks made from ingredients found within a few miles of Tattenhall.
