Our last talk of the season will be on 8 May.

There are plenty of canals near Tattenhall, all managed by the Canal & River Trust, the UK's largest canal charity, which is charged with caring for a 2000-mile network of canals and some navigable rivers.

You may have thought they're all about the engineering: keeping locks and banks in good order, repairing towpaths and bridges and maintaining moorings. But though all that is very necessary, there's a lot more to the C&RT than that. Did you know that C&RT manages the third largest heritage estate in the UK, all with open access? And that over 700 miles of the network now holds Green Flag status, meaning that the spaces are both safe and attractive for people to use? The C&RT also has a significant role to play in making places in our towns and cities.

Marcus Chaloner is Head of Placemaking and Design at the Trust and a Chartered Landscape Architect with over 25 years experience in waterside and waterway design. He leads a team of architects and landscape architects working on the Trust's most sensitive waterway sites in England and Wales. Come along to Tattenhall Gardening Society's last talk of the 2023-24 season on 8 May at 7.45pm in the Barbour Institute to hear Marcus tell us about some of the projects he's been involved in – a very different take on 'gardening'!
