Whoopee! I thought, a tax refund – then I realised that this email was odd, and I was sure that in the past if I had a tax refund I was informed by HMRC by letter and that it was automatic.

I forwarded the said email to them – HMRC at phishing@HMRC.gsi.gov.uk the reply was swift emphasising that this was a scam and that this was not their procedure. So I deleted it from my inbox and my Trash as instructed.

Two days later I had another email from the same source saying how much I was due to receive and pushing to get me to reply, I forwarded this to HMRC as before. They clearly were working hard to get my bank details.

It does seem that these days we are bombarded with all sorts of scams, from all sides. I frequently put the phone down when I think it is a strange call – you know those ones that just have the sound of a call centre, but sometimes they call back and I realise it really is a phone call I need to take! And that is the principle I now work on, if they really want to speak to you, they will call back.
