The Remembrance Service held at the church of St John the Divine, tucked up on The Sandstone Ridge, was hugely significant for the tiny hamlet of Burwardsley.
Their new Roll of Honour was unveiled. You may recall that 2 Nostalgic Burwardsley exhibitions were held to raise the funding for this fitting tribute, together with a number of private donations.
The Roll of Honour is a direct outcome of a member of this Webteam having stumbled on the broken fragments of a headstone relating to John Thomas Tydd, a Royal Welch Fusilier, killed in November 1914. The headstone has subsequently been fully restored.
The Burwardsley Service of Remembrance was held immediately after the unveiling ceremony.
The Church of St John the Divine is also displaying a Commonwealth War Graves Sign on its Church Gates, part of the national initiative in remembering those casualties of war who are remembered in Churchyards throughout the land.
Several of the Burwardsley men are remembered on private family headstones, one family having lost 3 of its sons to The Great War.
Why not venture up to see the Roll of Honour?
