LLANTYSILIO HILLS FROM THE HORSESHOE PASS

DATE: Thursday June 22nd 2017

MEET: 09.00 a.m. behind Alison's to share cars to the Horseshoe Pass

ROUTE: From the Broxton roundabout take the A534 towards Wrexham. Continue round the Wrexham by-pass and join the A483 heading south. Exit at junction 4 and take the A525 right in the direction of Ruthin, passing through Coedpoeth. Continue on the A525 towards Llandegla. (Just after a bendy stretch of road, note the green signs for Llandegla Fishery on the right – we will be stopping at the cafe there on the way back.) At the traffic lights near Llandegla turn left on to the A5104, then after about a mile turn left again at the roundabout on to the Horseshoe Pass road A542. Drive up to the Ponderosa Cafe (SJ232484) and park opposite – NB the parking area is quite rough so take care as you enter it.

WALK: A scenic walk along the Llantysilio hills, which form a chain of small peaks stretching south-west from the Horseshoe pass. We will begin with a steady ascent to Moel y Faen, then avoid the steep, loose descent from Moel y Gamelin by by-passing it on paths which are fairly level but very narrow, contouring round the steep hillsides with superb views over the Dee valley. The path continues via Moel y Gaer and finally Moel Morfydd, with a contrasting return route on a mixture of quiet roads, field paths and lower level bridle paths which could be a bit muddy in places. About 8 miles, with 1400 ft of ascent spread over the day. Be aware that this walk does include three significant climbs, some fairly steep downhill stretches and some narrow paths/sheep tracks, but we will take our time to enjoy the views.

A shorter walk of about 5 miles, avoiding the last two hills, is available in the event of bad weather – Esme is happy to volunteer to lead this version anyway!

FOOD & ESSENTIALS: Intended as a short day walk so bring drinks/lunch as required. On the way back we can stop at the Llandegla Fishery cafe – nicer than the Ponderosa bikers' cafe – for a well-deserved drink. The weather is set to be very warm so please ensure that you are carrying plenty of water, have a protective hat with you and high factor sun screen.
