Transition Tattenhall wins funding to start Community Energy Project.
Since January, Transition Tattenhall has been developing a community energy project. The aim is to make a significant, local, impact on emissions of CO2 The group has decided on a solar panel project.
The concept is that local businesses who consume a lot of electricity, will host panels on their large roofs, or yards. Transition Tattenhall will purchase the panels, install and maintain them. The host business will buy electricity produced by the panels at a contracted low rate (cheaper than from current providers via the grid). Any extra electricity will be sold to the grid. Transition Tattenhall will raise money for the project by issue of shares. Our customers, the host business, will get cheap electricity. Transition Tattenhall will pay interest on the share investment and we aim for a surplus over the 15 years of the project, which has to fund local community projects meeting Transition Tattenhall's objects.
But we are a long way from doing practical installations. Transition Tattenhall has won a grant to examine the feasibility of this scheme here in Tattenhall. The feasibility study is being done with help of GreenCat Renewables. It is focusing on the likelihood of sufficient customers, investors and if the financial model will work for customers, investors and Transition Tattenhall. The first part of the study has been completed – a study of 10 sites for space, connections, any planning issues and things are looking good. The second stage has begun where we engage with prospective customers and look at their energy requirements, and likely costs. We have worked closely with Bolesworth Estate to choose likely customers. The response has been slow. To speed things up we have been knocking on doors and talking directly to businesses. Things are picking up and we have enough businesses now to make a good job of the feasibility study, which is due to complete early in the New Year.
We have applied for a further grant to cover costs involved with the launch of the project; particularly drawing up legal agreements, issuing a share offer to raise capital and looking at the business plan in fine detail. There will be more happening soon so watch out for another announcement.
