The welcome return of the Zelkova Quartet rounded off a very successful 2017/18 concert season for Tattenhall Music Society in St Alban's Church on Sunday evening.

Opening with the beautiful Haydn String Quartet Op.64, No.2, they followed with the powerful and expressive String Quartet No.2 "Intimate Letters" by Janacek.

In the second half they performed Beethoven's technically demanding but sublime String Quartet in E minor, Op.59, No.2, "Razumovsky".

Zelkova comprise three siblings led by Caroline Pether on first violin, brothers Ed on second violin and Jonathan on cello. "Honorary Pether" Alex Mitchell played viola.

Caroline and Jonathan provided very detailed descriptions of the pieces played. Most audiences have probably never heard the word "knee-trembler"used at a concert before but, in the context of Janacek's "Intimate Letters" the description was perfect!

All in all, another memorable evening. We now take our summer break and look forward to coming back for our new season in the autumn.
