Many of you will have seen the very substantial property 'Portico House' on the High Street.

Now that the tall trees and shrubs have been cleared, one is able to appreciate what a grand property occupied this corner spot of the High Street with the junction to Bolesworth Road and Rocky Lane.

The very poor condition of Portico House, a Bolesworth Estate property, is such that it is being demolished and seven new dwellings (a mixture of one and two bedroomed units) will be erected on the site.

Tattenhall Local History thought you might like to see this dominant building in 'Times Past' when it was formerly known as 'Bank House Corner' (click on image to enlarge).

As many of you will know, the buildings at Rose Corner and Rosemary Row were designed by the distinguished architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Rose Corner is dated 1927 and is an ambitious, 'Palladian facade in miniature'. The new project for the junction has been designed to complement Rose Corner.

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis is best known as the creator of Portmeirion Village in Wales. He was also instrumental in establishing the British National Parks system and was knighted for his 'services to architecture and the environment'. He died in 1978.

Below you can see the architect's drawings for the Portico House corner.
