Chess has not only inspired many players to reach intellectual heights but also artists and artisans through the ages to create imaginative chess figurines. The exhibition displays a large variety of themes, shapes and materials, coming from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
From medieval Lewis chess men to the Simpsons as chess figures – this unique exhibition shows almost 50 examples from private collections. The collectors did not aim for precious materials (e.g. ivory), they went for original and fun sets that show the inspiration chess gives to this day. No limits to the imagination when Wellington meets an African soapstone King.
This is a great experience for adults as well as children and teenagers, chess players as well as all the non-players enjoying beautiful and sometimes quirky things.
