A Pleasant Apocalyptic Boxing Day, 2023
The smell-wild garlic. Just that. Seems early.

The sights-flowering ivy buds. Dark wet earth beneath upturned crispy leaves.

The feel- on my face no nipping. Ruddy hot head beneath this Christmas hat.

Silly regret at too big a coat for it is tepid.

Cold wall beneath my seat but only now that I have sat and drawn too long.

The sounds- kids on new bikes, families visiting graves.

A teenager caught in family grief sees a friend shouts "Hey Mugi". Runs off.

His relative says "No need for that".

A woodpecker pecks, birds squeak, another trills.

No more bleak mid winter, frosty the snowman or dashing through the snow.

For this Christmas is climate changed

And, despite the conceptual fear and the knowledge that garlic, ivy and mating bird song shouldn't be all at once it feels most pleasant.
