Tattenhall Village Show 2025 – Report
It was another excellent Show on Sunday and despite the challenging growing season we had a good lot of entries. It was particularly heartening that there were so many entries from families new to the village and young people – and not only in the special children's classes. Many children decided to compete in the adults' classes and not only took part but some were awarded a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place and that's no small achievement. As well as the competitive classes we also had a display of photos taken by the schoolchildren as part of their work last year on the local environment. Special thanks to Headteacher Mrs Bolton for encouraging the children to support community events and even helping with the raffle! The prizes were donated by TG Builders Merchants, Okells Garden Centre and many others and thank you to them.
As well as the children's artwork we also had a beautiful art installation on the stage by Beth Barlow, made using the cardboard leaves that people have been making over the summer. Unfortunately we lost our battle with modern technology and weren't able to show the school's 'Our Village-Our Future' video; maybe there'll be another opportunity at a later date.
Tattenhall Allotment Association & Tattenhall Gardening Society jointly commissioned a new trophy for the best entry in the 'Vegetables' section, in memory of the late Jim Harris who was a staunch supporter of the Show and rarely met with anyone who could better his veg entries. The trophy is turned wood, made by local sculptor Jo Burton, and it could only be in the shape of a prizewinning onion, the class for which Jim was best known.
The Show only happens because it's supported by the local community. It's organised and paid for by the Gardening Society but truly is a show for everyone, with baking, making, photography, art, crafts and many other things on display. We get help on the day from a large team, not all Tattenhall Gardening Society members, and without them we could not run the event. Thank you. We were financially supported this year by the Bolesworth Estate and an anonymous donor and we have to say a very heartfelt thanks to them as the Show is quite costly in our terms – we're not a big Society. And we also have to say a big thank you to Thom Morton & staff at the Spar, as they not only picked & packed our large food order for the Judges' Lunch, but refused to take any payment for it. What a star!
Next year's show will be on Sunday 6th September – put the date in your diaries now!
