Daddy, what's a succulent?
Ever been caught on the hop like this? Never fear, come along to the next Garden Society meeting and find out. We'll be meeting at the Barbour Institute, 19.30 for 19.45 Wednesday 11th October, taking membership and guest entrance fees and offering tea, coffee and biscuits before the show gets on the way.
Google tells us that a succulent plant is "thick and fleshy, having such leaves or stems" or "having thick fleshy leaves or stems adapted to storing water" – the camel of the botanic world? This probably means "good at being neglected", and good for those who want easy to care for house plants. But what are these plants like in the flesh rather than on the web?
Our speaker can tell us more. He is Ian Robinson, and his talk is "Succulents for the Cactophile". He has been a specialist cacti and succulent grower since the age of 5 (yes, 5, about the time he started school in 1952). He knows enough about these prickly and non-prickly plants to be a national show judge for the British Cactus and Succulent Society. If he cannot tell you how to grow and appreciate these plants, no one can.
Non-members,of all ages, are more than welcome. The idea is to educate and entertain, and complete novices to gardening are most welcome. Members can pay their annual fees and/ or pick up their annual programme cards too. (Membership brings options for discounts at a two local garden centres.)
