As many of you now know, Spar Tattenhall will introduce a charge of 5p for single-use carrier bags from 1 June 2016. This topic seems to have captured your imagination since we have received 350 hits since posting this announcement. This action is purely voluntary on our part and, following Defra's guidelines on the deduction of reasonable costs, Spar Tattenhall intends to donate all the proceeds to good causes, particularly environmental causes.

Issuing over 3000 plastic bags every single week is something that we want to urgently address. These bags take longer to degrade within the environment, can damage wildlife and are all too visible when littered throughout our countryside.

We think this is an excellent way forward to help not only the global environment but to support local environmental causes too.

You have until 31 May to nominate a local environmental organisation whom you think we should support.

Our suggestion box is in store — thanks to those of you who have already submitted your suggestions. For those of you that have not — just drop the name of your chosen organisation into the box.

Watch this space for our announcement at the beginning of June.

Many thanks — Thom Morton
