On Saturday 10 June the Beaver Scouts, (aged 6 & 7), from 1st Sandstone Scout Group completed a 6 mile hike to raise money for the Alzheimers Society.

Accompanied by some of the older Cub Scouts (aged 8 – 9), not to mention one 4 year old sibling, and guided by the Scouts and Explorer Scouts (aged 10 – 17), they set out from their Scout HQ on Bickerton Hill on a bright sunny morning. Together with their Leaders, families and friends they all completed the 6 miles along the Sandstone Trail to Beeston Castle with a picnic lunch in Bulkeley Woods half way along.

On arrival the young people got free admission to explore Beeston Castle where, in addition to measuring the depth of the well, they discovered how it was captured during the Civil War and why there might still be undiscovered treasure somewhere in the Castle.

"The children deserve a prize for just turning up" said Group Leader Tony Straw. "6 miles is a daunting distance, especially for young 6 year old Beaver Scouts, and the fact they all completed the Hike without complaint and most then had enough energy to explore the Castle does them all great credit"

By completing the hike they hope to raise £3000 in sponsorship for the Alzheimers Society. In the last 7 years the annual Hike has over £17,000 for various charities and this year it is hoped to reach £20,000.

Scouts of all ages promise, when they first join, to "be kind, to help other people, and to think of others before themselves". Those who completed the hike in aid of those less fortunate than themselves are certainly keeping their promise. As our motto says – "We can't do everything, but we must do something"
