It is not necessary to be a member of the U3A Walking Group to sample a couple of walks, see if you enjoy them (and us) and then become a member.

So, here are the arrangements for our walk on 9 June which might be suitable for anyone who wants to just have a short walk; travel with us to the Shady Oak; walk along the canal path as far as you wish and then return to the pub by 12.00 noon for light refreshments together.

The short walk this month is a circuit around Beeston Castle, taking in part of the Sandstone Trail and the canal to Wharton Lock. This lovely short walk is approx 3-3.5 miles and takes about 1hr 40mins with a brief stop. The terrain is gently undulating through a mix of woodland, canal towpath and fields. It has mainly gates with just a few well maintained stiles. A couple of the fields have very friendly cows in them who appear at ease with ramblers and less than mildly inquisitive. The fields with cows, however, have several points from which you can leave the field if you are uncomfortable and the abiity to then walk on the other side of the hedge/fence.

Our start point is the car park of the Shady Oak pub in Tiverton alongside the canal; they are OK with us parking there as long as we use the pub afterwards.

We start at 10:15am at the Shady Oak and we can meet behind Alison's at 10.00am to share lifts etc. Alternatively, make your way to The Shady Oak direct and we will all set off at 10.15am.

Please let me know if:
*you are staying for refreshments as we need to let the Shady Oak have numbers
* you will meet us at Alison's or at The Shady Oak
this is important in case there is any last minute change of plan – jillhug@hotmail.co.uk or phone me on 01829 770634

So, try out something new, meet some interesting and engaging people, enjoy our local countryside and try this and another walk and you might just want to become a member of the Walking Group on a more regular basis.

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on 9 June (image by www.nbamyjo.com)
