'The Lodge' if you don't know it, was historically attached to 'The Rookery' on Chester Road

The Tattenhall Local History Website has a very detailed section on:

That said, many of you will have seen that 'The Lodge' is being transformed with a new thatched roof.

This member of the Webteam stopped to have a chat with the team of skilled 'Roof/Master Thatchers' who are currently undertaking the work:

Did you know ...

  • Every thatched roof is unique, acknowledging regional thatching styles and materials
  • Thatched roofs are a distinctive part of our heritage
  • The bundles of reeds that can be seen in the photographs are not local to the UK – there are simply not enough reeds in the UK to meet the demand
  • Reeds are imported, therefore, from the Ukraine, from Turkey and from as far away as China!
  • That said, Marram grass might be used in Ireland and, occasionally, roofs have been thatched with heather

Our thanks to the current owners for allowing us to sneak a peek.
