We are aware of some of the negative comments on the Tattenhall News/Updates Facebook Page regarding the path which leads from Jubilee Wood to the Public Footpath linking Dark Lane with Burwardsley Road, and some of your suggestions such as getting 'the council involved to cut back the nettles' etc. We are also equally aware of the lack of open space in Tattenhall, not least since the school field was fenced and with the ongoing consultation regarding 'out of hours use'.

Just for information everyone ....

  • The path is a 'permissive path' (not a public footpath) and is actually on land owned by Bolesworth Estate
  • Tattenhall Wildlife Group (TWiG) manages the whole area. This area is part of the Mill Brook Natural Flood Management scheme supported by the Environment Agency, Bolesworth Estate and the tenant farmer
  • Public access, therefore, is at the discretion of the Estate and TWiG
  • Whilst we are happy, therefore, for walkers to use the permissive path, we are under no obligation to keep it clear of nettles, thistles and brambles. This whole area, including Jubilee Wood, is principally managed for nature conservation
  • Walkers need to be aware of the 'hazard' and wear protective clothing if they feel the need. Whilst we acknowledge that nettles sting and brambles puncture – both plants have a significant wildlife value too
  • We would also encourage everyone to remove their dog mess if they use this area – regrettably some individuals pay scant regard to this recurring problem

A more positive way forward, therefore, would be to join TWiG in undertaking some practical conservation – we would willingly supervise a Saturday morning 'working party' to manage the permissive path (contact twig20189@gmail.com and we will get back to you ....)

We look forward to hearing from you.
