Poem for March by Mike Penney
Voyage to Tattenhall
The bus crunched forward
crawling from a city's concrete fist,
tumbling outwards to wilder spaces
eyes retuning to rolling vistas,
pasture suffusing through
green blending distances,
tree tops needling mid-Cheshire's spine,
sandstone flowing ridge
in pale September light.
A world apart envelops
disembarking feet to rural shops
then peaceful zones of silent
churchyard paths pull heart and mind
to wild corners – the 'Spinney'
in late Summer gown;
a pillar box speared
a surprising welcome
a vibrant flash of colour,
cosy with its coat of wool.
Painting by Beth Barlow.
