2017 marks the Centenary Anniversary of the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Tsarina Alexandra. At that time, Lenin returned from exile, the Bolshevik Revolution gathered momentum and ultimately Lenin was declared leader of the new Communist era. Our image shows Lenin at Finland station in St Petersburg, formerly Leningrad, pointing the way to a 'radiant future'. With events in Russia in complete turmoil, Russia exited the Great War.

In relation to the Great War itself, there were many momentous events during 1917. The renewal of unrestricted submarine warfare on the British merchant fleet and the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line (a strong defensive position that the Germans had built after the Battle of the Somme) are two such events. As the Germans withdrew, they systematically destroyed the abandoned zones to deprive the Allies of any shelter and to render those zones completely obsolete. In 1917, the entry of the United States into the conflict and the British major offensive at Passchendaele (...I have been to hell, I have been to Passchendaele...) are also hugely significant.

2017 also marks the centenary anniversary of at least 7 Tattenhall Lads who died in the Great War (named below) – you can read their full stories on our local history website – CLICK HERE)

Lance Corporal James Edwin Breen; Lieutenant Roger Christian Brierley; Second Lieutenant Samuel Hatten Field; Private William Harper; Private George Stoneley; Private Thomas Wilding; Private Charlie Worth
