National Emergency Alert Test
If you are visiting the Annual Village Show on September 7th there will be a very noisy 10 seconds as the Village Show will be interrupted by a test warning from the National Emergency Alert System. From previous experience – it is very loud and disturbing!
Of course this will happen wherever you are, as it will be on your mobile phone, whether it is on or off.
Mobile phones across the UK will experience their first test warning from the emergency alerts system in more than two years , as the Cabinet Office seeks to "ensure that it works when we need it most".
The test, which will take place at 3pm on 7 September, will be the first since April 2023. The event will include users' phones making a loud, siren-like sound coupled with vibrations so that people with a visual or hearing impairment will know they have received the alert.
The system, which was introduced in March 2023, was designed to warn the public of any dangers to life including storms, flooding or terror attacks by sending alerts to mobile phones in an affected area.
Since 2023, the system has been used five times to warn people of threats, including in two alerts in December and January issued ahead of the arrival of Storm Darragh and Storm Eowyn.
Pat McFadden, the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, called the alert system a "vital tool for keeping the nation safe when lives are on the line and every minute matters".
He added: "We do not use the system often, but it is always on standby should we need to act."
Please warn any of your neighbours or friends who you think do not read social media, as it could be quite disturbing, and they need to know it is just a test!
