Mzz B’s August Garden

You may think that it’s not worth doing anything in the garden with the drought and heat- but hopefully the weather will change and we may get back to our usual summer weather. It is time to think of the next season .

This is a time to collect seed- I let  a Red Russian Kale plant go to seed – having had a little of the leaves and eaten some of the flowers in salads  – I collected some seeds and sowed them and they germinated in 2 days! – it’s always good to think that this hot weather has some benefits in that  it will help seed germinate quite quickly and give you crops for next spring.You can also take semi ripe cuttings  to make new plants.

Jobs for August

• Sow small quantities of salad crops  like winter hardy lettuces, rocket ,oriental greens, spring onions, and microgreens to come on later in the summer and autumn.
• Other crops to sow now- annual flowers like marigolds, cornflowers- sow in pots and thin out into bigger pots before winter to plant out later in the autumn.
• Also sow cauliflowers and spring cabbage.for the winter and spring.
• Collect and sow seeds from your garden
• Take cuttings of half-hardy perennials like fuchsias, pelargoniums, salvias, and verbenas, alongside woody herbs and shrubs such as lavender, rosemary, and hydrangeas,
• Dead head what flowers you have and cut back plants in the hope that they will regrow and flower in a few weeks.
