We are hearing that you are creating poppies in abundance!! Well done to all of you so far (we certainly know that Sylvia has created at least 180 single-handedly and that a member of our own Webteam has also created 40)!!!

As you know, Tattenhall will be holding a weekend of events to mark the centenary anniversary of 'The Armistice'; that date, 100 years ago, when the fighting of The Great War ended.

Our wonderful WI have taken on the responsibility for creating a poppy installation within the Barbour Institute – memories of the impressive creations at both the Tower of London and at St George's Hall, Liverpool, come to mind.

So far, the WI have held 2 coffee mornings to raise funds for poppy-making.

The next coffee morning will be held on Tuesday 1 May – 10.30am-12noon at the home of Pat Rogers, 7 Gorsefield, off Covert Rise, Tattenhall. Their very modest charge is just £2 plus 50p raffle.

The poppies need to be red with a black centre but can be made in any material and in any size. There are patterns for knitting and crocheting (ring Sue, WI President, on 01829 772659) but you could design your own petal shape to be made in another material (2, 4 or 6 petals). They all need to be delivered to Sue at 14 Barnfield.

We are also compiling a record, listing reasons as to why people have agreed to help make poppies.

How many do you think we need - possibly 10,000!! We have heard that Jan from Tarporley (you do not need to live in Tattenhall to take part) plans to make 61 as this was the number of men from her village killed in the The Great War.

We are currently talking to Tattenhall Local History to determine the exact number of lads that died in the conflict from Tattenhall and its immediate district – War Memorials, whilst recording the names of many who died, are not an accurate record since families had a number of choices in how to remember their loved ones.

We are also about to flood the village with posters about the poppy-making.

If you would like one to display in your window, ring Ruth on 01829770762.
