Many Tattenhallers may have heard rumours about The Sportsmans Arms and seen the sign on the side wall of the pub asking for prospective tenants to step forward. What's going on you ask?

This member of the community has been down to see Darren and Wendy, the Landlord and Landlady, and asked them all about it.

Wendy, who many of you will know for her forthright and friendly nature, pulls no punches. 'I'm 72 years old' she says, 'and I can't carry on doing the hours that are needed here.' Wendy cooks, serves on the bar, sings in the karaoke and generally runs the place along with Darren – who keeps an exceedingly good pint.
'It's sad, I know, we've only been here for 14 months, and we've made lots of good friends, but we can't make enough to pay our way and make anything – we're eating into our own money all the time.'

Darren and Wendy are, therefore, retiring – possibly by the end of March. They've bought a small house (with a pool!) in Zante, Greece – a place that they both love and where they have already spent many happy times when they ran a Taverna there. They have lots of friends in Zante and are looking forward to spending time with them in the sunshine..... can't be bad.

Many of you might be questioning why we have had so many new tenants in The Sportsmans Arms over the last few years? Just to clarify .... Bolesworth Estate owns the building and Thwaites Brewery lease the building from the Estate. The rent is payable by Thwaites Brewery who then sub-let the building to the Licensee. As Tattenhallers will probably know, there are a number of free-of-tie premises in the area but The Sportsmans Arms is not one of them. On a positive note, Thwaites Brewery have invested in the property on an ongoing basis and have maintained it to a high standard.

In the meantime – a big 'THANK YOU' to Darren and Wendy for bringing the pub to life again ....... we all wish you well and hope you enjoy your well-deserved retirement in the sun.

And for the future of The Sportsmans Arms – let's all watch this space!
