Major road closures in Chester

New water main installation

Drivers in south Chester are set for months of disruption as a new pipeline is being installed from Huntington to Boughton. Works began Monday (January 29) and will last 10 months as Severn Trent lays a new water pipe between Huntington Water Treatment Works and Boughton Water Treatment Works.

Closures will mainly affect the B5130, on Chester Road, Dee Banks and Sandy Lane, extending onto the A51 Christleton Road. The works come after the water industry regulator OFWAT ordered Severn Trent to reduce the number of people in Chester reliant solely on Boughton Water Treatment Works.

Currently, 101,102 people in Chester are solely reliant on the Boughton works, and would be left without running water if the plant were to fail. The pipeline would connect United Utilities Huntington water works to Severn Trent's Boughton plant, allowing water to be pumped into the city from the village.Some road closures will be in place for weeks at a time. Brassey Street will be closed for a day short of two months, from March 4 to May 3. Chester Road will be closed for over three months between Gorse Way and Caldy Valley Road, from March 25 to July 12. The road will then be closed between Caldy Valley Road and Keristal Avenue, for two months from July 13 to September 13.
The initial work involves several other utilities moving their existing services to make room for the new pipe. Road closures will be in place during the works.
