Cheshire is famously synonymous with Dairy Farming and Agriculture. Cheshire's farmers are rightly being praised for maintaining the supply of essential food products despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

Equine activities are another huge part of the rural Cheshire economy. You only have to look at the website "CheshireHorse"to see the wide range of businesses that serve this sector. The business directory on the site has in excess of 120 different headings, listing in total many hundreds of businesses. Covid-19 has of course had a major impact on these businesses.

We spoke to Tom Dascombe, resident trainer at our local flat racing establishment "Manor House Stables" who summed up the situation succinctly:

"My first responsibility is to look after the horses in my care that are self-evidently not able to look after themselves"

This simple statement has huge ramifications. Manor House has over 80 horses in training. Tom has to maintain a standard of care that the horses routinely enjoy – a scientifically managed diet, regular exercise tailored to each horse's need, vigilant veterinary attention, grooming and blacksmith care. Equine mental well-being is maintained by routine and a variety of rest and leisure. Under Covid-19 conditions, essential work restrictions and social distancing rules have to be followed. All non-essential visitors including owners are locked out. Tom describes how this challenge is being met in the Manor House Monthly publication – click this link.

This is just one example of how Cheshire's Equine sector is surviving Covid-19, keeping its staff safe and the animals in its care fit and well, ready for better times ahead.
