This week, local Year 13 students have been working with Tattenhall Wildlife Group (TWiG) and the National Trust, in part fulfilment of the volunteering component relating to their Duke of Edinburgh, Gold Award.
They have:
*Collected and disposed of multiple bags of rubbish from Jubilee Wood (including dog poo) – we would again request that users please comply with the Countryside Code
*Repaired some of the 'leaky dams' on the Mill Brook Flood Prevention Scheme to help mitigate flood risk in the centre of the village, particularly those properties in Old Mill Place
*Cleared brambles in established woodland managed by TWiG
*Spent 2 sessions with the National Trust Ranger on Bickerton Hill dealing with invasive Silver Birch which negatively impact on this example of rare Lowland Heath and which require regular management (our thanks to National Trust Ranger, Duncan Crawford, who supervised the clearance of one complete hillside)
*Managed areas of a disused railway line which have been havens for orchids this summer
Well done everyone – community engagement and volunteering at its best – your Gold Award component is nearing its completion!
