The Tattenhall Annual Show

The Tattenhall and District Agricultural Society held an annual show, which included animals and pets! We are not sure when the Agricultural Society was founded, does anyone know? We think it began in the 1800's.

In 1970 a Horticultural section was formed within the Agriculture Society and this gradually took over! A pet section however was still included- in 1971 entries for adults were 5p and for children 3p- not sure how that compares to the current entry prices. It was sponsored by local businesses and individuals , and this included giving prizes. Anthony Barbour was very kind to sponsor the show for many years. Okells Nurseries, and The Tattenhall and District Parish Council were and still are sponsors amongst others.

The WI were involved from the beginning providing the cake and tea and being involved in the planning of the handicraft section.

Some of the cups that were awarded then, dating back to the Agricultural Society days, are still in use today. Most were donated by local people.

Apart from the lack of pets (Health and Safety ruled this out many years ago!) the Show has changed little. Tweaks here and there to reflect different patterns of gardening. Perpetual carnations and chrysanthemums featured, and are now long gone. Homemade wine was also included at that time, but it would seem that this is an interest that has dwindled.

So this year's show is the 48th to be held, it is part of the village's heritage , part of the history of rural life. Show schedules will be available soon and also here online.

Join in and ensure that we can celebrate 50 years of Annual Shows in two years time.
