As a rule we do not publish obituaries online.

That said, the PPG has just heard of the death of one of our former, much-loved GPs, Dr Margaret Sanderson, at the age of 84, and whom many of our readers will remember well.

We approached Dr Philip Milner who joined the Practice in 1981, at which time Dr Margaret Sanderson was a Partner with Dr Kershaw.

Philip recalls that she was quite a character, stating that many of our older patients will remember her well indeed – he was frequently asked how she was.

Margaret came from a medical family, her brother Dr Andrew Sanderson was a GP in Spenymoor in the North East.

She qualified in Newcastle before moving to Cheshire and lived firstly in Tattenhall, and later in a cottage near Gallantry Bank, Bickerton.

Philip also recalls that Margaret came across as a strict, old-fashioned type of doctor, who expected her advice to be obeyed! That said, he recalls that she had a huge level of commitment in her role as a local GP and that she was always a strong advocate for her patients; particularly standing firm for the interests of the most vulnerable patients.

Margaret retired on ill health grounds in the 1980s.

In her mid-50s she settled in Cumbria where she continued with her passion for Carriage Driving. Our image is from the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald for 3 August 2007 which shows Margaret and Anna Muir competing with Tebay Glenlivet at the North West Driving Club event at Gamblesby.

Margaret lived most recently in Lazonby in Cumbria, where her funeral will take place on Thursday.
