Ofcom have agreed for Royal Mail to make this change, but insisted that First Class post must continue to be delivered from Mondays to Saturdays.
It is likely that 2nd Class post will be delivered every other weekday – and never on Saturdays.
The purpose of this change is to help Royal Mail cut costs, and, according to Ofcom, to help it 'survive'. In addition to the above changes, a review of the price of stamps is being carried out, with planned consultation set for next year. Targets for delivery would also be amended: First Class down to 90% the next day; and 2nd Class down to 95% within three days. However, Ofcom have added a 'back stop' delivery target: 99% of all mail MUST be delivered no more than two days late.
So, be alert as to when you post your 2nd class mail – remembering that Saturday deliveries and posting may no longer be happening.
