The story so far

The Big Plastic Count is the UK's largest investigation into household plastic waste. In 2022, nearly a quarter of a million of us across the country came together from schools, households and communities to count a week's worth of our plastic packaging waste.

Together, we showed that nearly 2 billion pieces of plastic packaging are being thrown away each week in the UK, and hardly any of it is recycled. Much of that waste was being burned, shipped abroad or sent to landfill.

The data didn't lie – we can't recycle our way out of the plastics crisis. Thousands of you shared these results with your MP, calling on the Government to set environmental targets. But so far, they've failed to act.

A once-in-a-generation moment.

So, The Big Plastic Count is back – and this time we've got an even bigger target in our sights.

Now, we have a huge opportunity to finally get to grips with the plastic waste crisis. Governments across the world are negotiating a Global Plastics Treaty which could usher in the kinds of measures we need to end the age of plastic.

That's why we need you and thousands of others to come together, count our plastic waste and push ministers, supermarkets and big brands to lead the way at the global talks.
