During an afternoon of rare sunshine last week, members of TWiG (Tattenhall Wildlife Group) took this selection of images adjacent to the Mill Brook (click on each image to enlarge).

The images speak for themselves and reflect the importance of the flood-alleviation work which will take place here in Tattenhall.

You will recall that in October we reported that, working with TWiG and the Bolesworth Estate, the Environment Agency will deliver a scheme which will significantly reduce flood risk in the heart of the village.

Naturally the work of the Environment Agency has been focused on Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire due to the unrelenting rainfall which has been a feature of the last few weeks.

However, the aim of this local initiative is to literally 'slow the flow' of flood water from the Mill Brook and so protect the centre of the village which has previously flooded.

The range of flood-alleviation solutions includes creating two large flood storage areas, damming the original line of the Brook and re-profiling the banks of the Mill Brook.

Additionally, the water quality of the Mill Brook will improve and the flood storage areas will eventually become reed beds, providing additional habitat for wintering birds such as snipe.

TWiG has now been advised that work will start as soon as possible and we will update you on a regular basis.
