Tattenhall residents will be interested to know that one of the most iconic houses in Tattenhall has come on to the market for the first time for some years.
' The Rookery' was constructed in 1909 on the former site of 'Bank House', Chester Road. Bank House had been the residence of Robert Orton, a wealthy man, who was the first Chairman of the Tarvin RDC..
Following the death of Robert Orton in the early 20th century, the property became the home of Frederick and Edith Wignall who swiftly undertook a programme of extensive reconstruction, transforming the property into what is now known as 'The Rookery'. Frederick was High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1916-17: his wife, Edith, was the daughter of Sir Henry Tate, the founder of Tate and Lyle.
Frederick Wignall died in 1939 but his widow continued to live at 'The Rookery' until her death in 1958 when the property was bought by Cheshire County Council who converted it into a residential home for the elderly.
Between 2002 and 2004 Rookery Hall was comprehensively restored and is now a very impressive house.
It is being marketed by Chester agents, Jackson-Stops, sponsors of Tattenhall Cricket Club in 2019.
