Drone Footage – 'Slowing The Flow' & Protecting Residents from Floods

Members of TWiG were out taking some drone footage of the flood defences over the Christmas period. Rain it certainly did and many of you will have seen water pouring over the cascade adjacent to the War Memorial.

Last year Phase 2A of 'Slowing the Flow' of the Mill Brook was completed and this, together with Phase 1, is now capable of slowing the flow of some 5,500 cubic metres of water.

The intention, of course, is to continue to protect residents in those properties in Old Mill Place which have previously suffered from catastrophic flooding (Click on the image to run the video. There is a full screen option in the video controls).

This drone footage speaks for itself as it starts well up on China Meadow and follows the course of the Mill Brook ...

  • The 3 curved bunds (dams) are shown to be successfully retaining excess water
  • The retention ponds which were created on China Meadow are approximately half full
  • The seepage barrier was working efficiently, diverting water from the Mill Brook into China Meadow

Impressively, the following bird life was also noted by one of our expert birdwatchers on the TWiG team:

  • 50 lapwing
  • 30 wigeon
  • 25 mallard
  • 1 black backed gull
  • 250 common gulls in surrounding fields
  • 200 grey lagged geese flying in the vicinity
