The WI have contacted us regarding how many individuals local to Tattenhall and it's immediate district died in the The Great War, just in case an enthusiastic and creative genius wishes to knit, sew or stitch the exact number of poppies for the Armistice Weekend event.

This is an initiative which has also become a focus for other villages.

It might also be that you are a surviving relative and wish to create poppies for your family member.

Our War Memorial contains the names of 34 individuals who lost their lives in The Great War. Families, however, had many choices and this should not be viewed as an accurate figure.

Relatives could choose to have a name placed on a local Memorial, they could opt for a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone (there is one in the Churchyard of St Alban's which relates to The Great War), or names could be recorded on family graves. Some families chose every option so there is sometimes overlap and overlap on Memorials too!

Research by Tattenhall Local History confirms that the following individuals are recorded (overlap accepted) in our district ... this can change, of course, when any new information comes to light.

  • Tattenhall - 38 men
  • Burwardsley – the lives of 11 men have now been researched, all of whom had a direct association with Burwardsley – the new Roll of Honour Board will be installed in the Church of St John the Divine on 11 November 2018.
  • Handley – 3 named individuals are recorded within the Church of All Saints

So, another challenge – let's go with 52 Poppies!
